In my experience, there is not such a tool or template, and for Airstreams specifically (at least I haven’t found it) because it’s challenging to estimate the cost of a renovation given there are so many variables.

What’s a ballpark cost estimate when hiring a pro to do the work versus DIY?.Which are repairs and improvements that are “nice to have” versus necessary and must be done?.

What are the many parts you need to source and purchase and how much do these parts cost in average?.Looking back, when we started researching, I wish we had a tool or template that would have helped with breaking down the buckets of work needed and anticipated cost by category so that we could make an informed decision which things we wanted to have done (and which ones can be deferred to a later point in time to save cost). I was lucky that they started the renovation process within 2 months, and that we didn’t end up on a waitlist like many others. So, I ended up calling the Airstream restoration business that had worked on our Tradewind for the previous owners. One even said, that they would need so much time skilling up on the process and charging their regular rates would be way too expensive. I realized that I couldn't find any contractor or handyman who would do the work without having experience with Airstreams. Maybe a general contractor, a carpenter or some sort of handyman who would be able to figure things out and has skills and experience with plumbing, electrical, flooring, welding, cabinet building, etc.

I wondered if there was an alternative to the costly option of hiring a professional Airstream restoration business. The first challenge was that I had no idea, where to even start looking for someone who could do the work. We knew from the get-go that we would not want to renovate it ourselves and that we would need professional help. Like many other first-time Airstreamers, I started to search for renovation ideas and was anxious to find out more about the renovation process and most importantly associated cost. Basically, it had a clean and empty interior and was ready to be built out (which I thought was the more fun part). We were lucky to find a vintage trailer that had been gutted with a new sub-floor, new flooring, plumbing, electrical and AC. The previous owners had started renovating it from the ground up a few years before. In February 2019, my boyfriend and I purchased a 1966 Airstream Tradewind with no experience.

The trailer’s design takes advantage of every inch of space, with many features having multiple uses–the shower head can be used outdoors to wash off equipment or dirty feet the sink and stove fold down for more counter space when they’re not being used. It also has heating and air conditioning. It also fits a tiny kitchen (with mini fridge, microwave, sink, and stove), a tinier bathroom (with toilet and shower), and a sitting area that coverts into a double size bed.

It comes equipped with a built-in, lockable technology dock with USB ports, plus a solar kit and complimentary Bose bluetooth speaker. Contrast that with the company’s classic trailer, which is more than 31 feet, weighs 7,300 pounds, and starts around $135,000.īasecamp, which sleeps two people, seems custom-built for tech-dependent millenials. Basecamp is just over 16 feet long and weighs 3,000 pounds.
